Mostly by accident, Sony developed the first Walkman personal
stereo system and began releasing it around 1980 in the USA.
By 1981, several manufacturers were on the bandwagon. The
Walkman
made the trip to Grandma's a lot more entertaining (too bad we
didn't have Gameboys and MP3 players back then).
