Anvil Hair Metal Band

If it was heavy, sharp, mean, evil, or plain tough, you named your metal band after it in the 80's.  The Canadian band Anvil first formed way back in 1973 as the band Lips, so you can see why they changed their name (Lips was actually the nickname for Steve Kudlow, lead singer and lead guitar player).  Anvil is credited as being a significant influence on many famous 80's thrashers, including Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer.

In the early to mid 80's, Anvil had a bit of record label trouble, but managed to produced several albums.  By 1987, the band had signed with Metal Blade Records.  It was their 1987 album, Strength of Steel, that was the more popular (reaching 191 on the Billboard top 200).  Metal on Metal (1982), another of the band's most acclaimed releases, was re-released in 2007 as the album "This is Thirteen."

Anvil was thrust back into the limelight in 2008 after the release of a documentary called Anvil! The Story of Anvil, which received some critical acclaim.

At the time of this writing, the Anvil Discography was as follows:
