Thin Lizzy Band

Thin Lizzy was an Irish rock band that formed way back in 1969 in Dublin.  The band's name was an Irish take on the phrase "tin lizzie", which was both a comic book character and a reference to the Ford Model T.  Phil Lynott was the vocalist and bass player, and Brian Downey took up drum duty.  At a number of different points in the band's career, Gary Moore was their guitarist.  When it was all said and done, the band released 12 studio albums throughout the 1970's and early 1980's.  Their first album (self-titled) was released in 1971 on Decca Records.

Thin Lizzy's first major success came with the release of their single "Whiskey in a Jar", which was their version of a popular Irish ballad.  They did not intend for that song to be released as a single, but luckily for them it was, given that it reached no. 6 on the UK charts.  It was after their 1976 release, Jailbreak, that Thin Lizzy really began to take off.  This was the album that featured the hit song "The Boys are Back in Town", which was their only big hit in the USA.  The band toured heavily as the opening act for bands like Aerosmith, Rush, Queen, and REO Speedwagon.  Thin Lizzy had much greater chart success in Ireland and the UK.  Other popular Thin Lizzy songs were "Jailbreak", "Don't Believe a Word", "Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me in Its Spotlight)", "Rosalie", "Waiting for Alibi", "Do Anything You Want", "Sarah", "Chinatown" (1980), "Killer on the Loose" (1980), and "Cold Sweat" (1983).  It is worth noting that Phil Lynott did have some success in the US as a solo artist in the early 1980's.  Some of you may remember the songs "Hollywood (Down on Your Luck)" and "Out in the Fields".  Thin Lizzy broke up in 1983.  Phil died in 1986, at the age of 36, from complications of drug addiction.  Thin Lizzy has continued on sans Lynott.  Although they have not released any new studio material under the name Thin Lizzy, the band still actively tours as Thin Lizzy.  New material was being released under the band name of "Black Star Riders".  The Thin Lizzy Discography is as follows:
