Tommy Shaw, best known for his time with the band Styx, also had a solo career in the 1980's. Shaw was picked up by Styx in 1975 and became instrumental in the band's success (a number of their hit songs were Shaw's). Shaw's solo career was in many ways his way of maintaining his desire to play rock and stay off the pop charts. Tensions between Dennis DeYoung and Shaw came to a head with the album Kilroy was Here (1983), and it was then that he left for his solo career.;

In 1984, Tommy Shaw released his first solo album (Girls with Guns). The album featured the title track that peaked at 6 on the US Main Rock charts. His 1985 release, What If, featured the hit song "Remo's Theme (What If)". In the early 1990's, Shaw joined up with some other veterans to form the band Damn Yankees. After Damn Yankees, he went back to releasing a few more solo albums as well as going back with Styx. He even had a project with Jack Blades of Night Ranger called Shaw Blades (which has released a number of albums). In 2011, Shaw released a successful bluegrass album called The Great Divide, which is a major departure from his earlier work (but still solid if you like bluegrass).
