Kajagoogoo Band

The British band Kajagoogoo, an early MTV favorite, has a band name that is frankly just fun to say...Kajagoogoo...This name has a much better ring than their first band name from 1979, which was Art Nouveau.  If you are after some fantastic story on how they came up with Kajagoogoo, you will be sorely disappointed.  Word has it that the name is essentially based on the phonetic pronunciation of a baby's first words...yes, "gaga goo goo".

Kajagoogoo landed a record deal in 1982 with EMI records, and their first studio album, White Feathers, was released in 1982.  This release was by far their most successful, and featured the hit songs "Too Shy", "Ooh to Be Aah", and "Hang On Now".  This success took its toll on the band, and they fired their lead singer (Limahl, who went on to a solo career).  With a new vocalist, Kajagoogoo released Islands in 1984, which featured the hit songs "Big Apple" and "The Lion's Mouth".  After changing their name to Kaja and re-releasing Islands in the USA as Extra Play, another song charted on the US Dance charts called "Turn Your Back on Me".

As Kaja, their last release in the 80's was Crazy People's Right to Speak.  It was less than successful, and by 1985, Kajagoogoo was done.  It wasn't the end, however, as the original 5 piece band reunited in 2003 for a VH1 show called Bands Reunited.  Although there was never a lengthy reunion of the original Kajagoogoo band members, a new studio album was released in 2008 (Gone to the Moon).  At the time of this writing, the last known new studio work from all original Kajagoogoo members was the single "Death Defying Headlines" in 2011.  The Kajagoogoo Discography is as follows:
