SOUNDTRACK

Starring John Malkovich as Mr. Will, Danny Glover as Moze, Sally Field as Edna Spalding, and Ed Harris as Wayne Lomax, Places in the Heart was an Academy Award winning film released in 1984.  The film was a success with critics and at the box office.  This movie earned Sally Field her second Academy Award for best actress.

In this movie, Edna Spalding (Field) tragically loses her husband to gun violence.  It is the time of the great depression in the segregated town of Waxahachie, TX, and based on the need to provide for her two kids, Edna decides to plant cotton.  She hires Moze (Glover) to help her given his cotton experience, and she also boards a blind tenant, Mr. Will (Malkovich), who lost his site in the Great War.

In an effort to win the $100 prize for the first cotton bale brought to market, Edna “hires” a crew of pickers, who are keen to the fact that the $100 prize is the only way they will get paid for their work.  The group makes it, and in the process of working together, Edna, Moze, and Mr. Will form an interesting cohesive “family”.  All good things must come to an end, however, and the group is eventually split up due to the racist culture of the era.
