Released in 1980, Raging Bull was a Martin Scorsese biological sports drama that starred Robert DeNiro as Jake LaMotta, Joe Pesci as Joey LaMotta, and Cathy Moriarty as Vickie Thailer.  The movie was a hit with most critics, ultimately being nominated for 8 Academy Awards.  Some critics did not like how violent the film was, but by today’s standards, it was mild.  Robert DeNiro won the award for Best Actor.  Although the film did turn a profit, it was not a huge profit.  Many blame the lackluster returns on a poor advertising campaign.  The movie continues to be voted one of the best, if not the best, film to come out of the 1980’s.

The movie chronicles his life of the once great middle weight boxing champ Jake LaMotta, who actually helped DeNiro train for the movie in real life.  The movie takes us through the boxing career of LaMotta, from the earliest days where he fought and beat Sugar Ray Robinson, to his marriage to the very young Vicki Thailer.  Mixed up in the mob, LaMotta is forced to take a dive, which gets him banned from boxing until 1949, where he won the middleweight championship against Marcel Cerdan.

Jake LaMotta continues fighting as the years go by, eventually losing to Sugar Ray Robinson again in 1951.  After retiring and opening a club, LaMotta gets in trouble with the law for introducing underage girls to his patrons, and he ends up in jail.  Returning to NYC in 1958, Jake makes amends with this family, and takes up standup comedy.
