The award winning Stand by Me, a coming of age drama released in 1986, starred Wil Wheaton as Gordie Lachance (as a child), Corey Feldman as Teddy Duchamp, River Phoenix as Chris Chambers, Kiefer Sutherland as Ace Merrill, John Cusack as Denny Lachance, Jerry O’Connell as Vern Tessio, and Richard Dreyfuss as Gordie Lachance (as an adult).  The movie was a Rob Reiner film adaptation of a book by Stephen King titled The Body.  The movie was well received by critics and a major financial success for Columbia pictures.

In this movie, Gordie Lachance recounts an episode from his childhood whereby he and his friends went on a trek to find the body of a missing boy near Castle Rock, Oregon.  It is 1959, and Gordie (Wheaton) spends much time with his three friends, Chris (Phoenix), Teddy (Feldman), and Vern (O’Connell).  Each friend has his own familial and personal issues to deal with.  After hearing Vern’s older brother talk about the body of a kid named Ray Brower, who was hit by a train, the boys decide to set out to find the body, thus making themselves town heroes.

The journey along the railroad tracks to find the body is full of adventure, such as being chased by a mean dog, barely escaping being killed by a train themselves while crossing the train bridge, and being attacked by leeches.  During the mayhem, the boys open up to each other about their troubles, and their friendship grows stronger.  When they finally arrive at the body, so does Ace (Sutherland) and his gang of thugs, who want to take the credit themselves.  After Chris runs them off with a handgun he has borrowed, the friends decide instead to report the body’s whereabouts anonymously.  The movie ends with the adult Gordie describing what is friends grew up to be.
