Where's the Beef?

"Where's the beef" was a Wendy's fast food chain catchphrase used in tv commercials in 1984 and 1985.  The phrase was used to demonstrate that Wendy's competitors did not put as much meat on their hamburgers as did Wendys, and it was said by a little old lady named Clara Peller after she was presented with a hamburger with more bun than beef. The slogan took on a life of its own, eventually coming to mean:  where's the substance of an idea or prodcut?  Clara Peller herself became a celebrity of sorts, even having a song written about her catch phrase by D.J. Coyote McCloud.  The phrase was found on t-shirts, bumper stickers, frisbees, and many more places.  Clara's reign as the Wendy's advert spokesperson came to an end when she agreed to do commercials for Prego, declaring in those commericals, "I finally found the beef."
