A Passage to India was a drama film released in 1984.  It was based on the 1924 novel, of the same name, written by E. M. Forster.  The movie was written and directed by David Lean, who was also responsible for the movie Lawrence of Arabia.  A Passage to India was critically acclaimed and well received.  The movie made over 10 million dollars in profit and was nominated for tons of awards.  It is worth noting that Obi-wan Kenboi (Alec Guinness) starred in this movie).

The film was set in the 1920's, with a couple of British gals traveling to India at the height of India's independence movement (from Great Britain).  After befriending some locals, everyone agrees to go on an excursion to go cave exploring, and one of the ladies ends up raped, and the fingers quickly point to their new friend, a Dr. Aziz.  It turned out that Aziz was innocent, and the trial becomes a parallel freedom cause.  In the end, the Indians cheer the exoneration of Aziz and sneer at the British.  By the time the movie ends, all the old friends that are still alive make peace.
