That's Mr. Potato head to you.  We include Mr. Potato Head here because nearly all of us played with him at som point, but in reality, he was first distributed by Hasbro in 1952.  Originally, the toy was a box of plastic pieces that you would actually stuff into a real potato, but due to government safety regulations, a plastic potato was included by 1964.

By the mid 1970's, the Mr. Potato Head that most of us knew and loved came to market.  Everything was bigger due to the child safety regulations by the U.S. government.  As the years have gone by, Potato Head has changed some, but the premise is the same.  In later years, themed Potato Heads were produced, such as the Star Wars parody with Dart Tater and R2-POTATOO.
