Omega Race

Omega Race Arcade Game

Omega Race was a black and white vector graphics game, like Asteroids and Lunar Lander, released by Midway in 1981.  Omega Race did not take a genius to play, and for this reason, it was one of the biggest money making units for arcades in the early 1980’s.  The game was set in the year 2003, and as we all know, the game was an excellent predictor of the future.  In the game, the player controlled a spaceship, called the Omegan Space Fighter, using a rotating knob for direction and a button for thrust, in order to blow up enemy droid ships.  There were drone ships, commander ships, space mines, and shooting star ships.  The playing field was in the shape of a rectangle and the ship was not able to move through the screen like Asteroids, but would instead bounce off the edge of the screen.

Omega Race Arcade Game Cabinet

The arcade game came in a number of cabinet configurations, including some sit down versions that included black lights inside.  Home versions of the game were released on the Atari 2600, ColecoVision, VIC-20, Commodore 64, and a few more.
