David Robert Jones (David Bowie) hailed from Great Britain and was a staple of the music industries over multiple decades. Bowie played in many different bands through the 1960's, searching for success. Initially, his stage name was "Davey Jones", but due to the fact that there was already a Davey Jones in The Monkees, he changed his stage name to David Bowie after the Bowie knife. His first release as a solo artist in 1967 was a failure. Bowie's first recognized song was "Space Oddity", which was released on his second album in 1969 and charted at no. 5 in the UK (Apollo 11 launched a few days after the song's release). In 1972, Bowie resurfaced as Ziggy Stardust and released the hit song "Starman". Although Ziggy was a short-lived Bowie persona, Bowie continued his innovative musical reinvention as the years rolled on (including his androgynous dress).
It was in 1975, with the release of the album, Young Americans, that the USA began to take serious notice of David Bowie. Many of you will remember the hit song "Fame" from this album. In 1980, Bowie released the singles "Ashes to Ashes" and "Under Pressure" (collaboration with Queen). Bowie's 1980's peak was with the release of the album Let's Dance (1983), which featured the songs "Modern Love". "China Girl", and of course the title track. Bowie's videos received heavy rotation on MTV. Bowie's 1984 release, Tonight, featured the hit Beach Boys cover "God Only Knows" and "Blue Jean". In 1985, Bowie and Mick Jagger released their Live Aid single, "Dancing in the Street". Bowie's 1987 release, Never Let Me Down, featured the hit songs "Day In, Day Out", "Time Will Crawl", and "Never Let Me Down". In 1989, Bowie decided to shut down his solo act and started a short lived band called "Tin Machine". Bowie did more than produce music in the 80's. Some of you may remember him as an actor in movies like Absolute Beginner and Labyrinth (and the soundtrack for this one too).
As the years went by, Bowie was active on stage, on the silver screen, and in the studio. David Bowie passed away in early 2016. The David Bowie Discography is as follows:
