Eric Johnson was American guitarist from Austin, TX who started a solo career in the late 1970’s. His first album was recorded in 1978 (titled Seven Worlds) but was not released until years later due to contract disputes. His most popular album was 1990’s Ah Via Musicom, which featured the single “Cliffs of Dover”, which netted Johnson a 1991 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Other songs from this release that charted included “Righteous”, “High Landrons”, and “Trademark”. It is worth noting that he had been nominated for the same award in 1987 for a song called “Zap” which was released on his 1986 album Tones.
Eric Johnson has had other projects over the years, including in a band called Alien Love Child that started in 1994. As another example, the 1997 release (G3 – Live in Concert) is a collaboration with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. Johnson has continued producing new solo material and active well into the 2010’s.
