The roots of Scotland's Simple Minds can be traced back to Glasgow based punk band Johnny & the Self-Abusers, who played their first gig in 1977. Soon after the band released their first single, they split up. Some members went on to form the band The Cuban Heels, while others went on to form Simple Minds.
By the late 70's, Simple Minds had landed a record deal with Arista Records, and their first release, Life in a Day, hit shelves in 1979. The band's first European hit was "Love Song", from 1981's Sons and Fascination. That wasn't the end of the hits for the band. Other hit songs included "Promised You a Miracle" and "Glittering Prize" from New Gold Dream (81-82-83-8) (1982), "Waterfront" and "Speed Your Love to Me" from Sparkle in the Rain (1983), "Don't You (Forget About Me)" from the Breakfast Club movie soundtrack (1985), "Alive and Kicking," "Sanctify Yourself", and "All Things She Said" from Once Upon a Time (1985), and "Belfast Child" from Street Fighting Years (1989). It was the band's song "Don't You Forget About Me" that really catapulted their popularity in the USA.
As the years rolled on, tensions began to rise in the band, and by the 1990's, like many 80's bands, they began losing ground. Regardless, they did have several international hits. Simple Minds continued producing well into the 2010's, as all the original members went back to the studio in 2008. They could also be found on stage well into the 2010's.
