Englishman Robert Palmer started his first band at 15 in 1959. After playing in several different bands over the years before his big break, he eventually landed a gig with a band called Vinegar Joe in 1970. Vinegar Joe released three albums before disbanding in 1974. Shortly after, Palmer signed with Island Records as a solo artist. His first solo release, Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley, did not do well in the UK, but did chart in the USA. Some of you may remember the song "Sailin' Shoes" from this album.

Palmer moved from the UK, to the USA, then to the Bahamas, where he continued to release new material. Other Robert Palmer songs you may remember from the 1970's and early 1980's include "Every Kinda People" from Double Fun (1978), the cover for "Bad Case for Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)" from Secrets (1979), and "Johnny and Mary" from Clues (1980).

In 1983, Palmer performed at a charity concert with Duran Duran, where he became friends with the band. After Duran Duran's hiatus in 1985, Robert Palmer, along with Duran Duran's Andy Taylor and John Taylor, formed the super group Power Station. Power Stations first self-titled release featured the hit songs "Some Like It Hot" and the cover for "Get It On (Bang a Gong)". Robert Palmer did not tour with the band, but instead went back to a solo career. Palmer's 1985 release, Riptide, featured the hit songs "Addicted to Love" and "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On". His 1988 release, Heavy Nova, featured the hit songs "Simply Irresistible" and "She Makes My Day". Palmer continued to produce new material throughout the 1990's, although the sound was different than his earlier rock sound. The Power Station even reunited to release another album with Palmer in 1996 (Living In Fear).

Palmer was a heavy smoker. In 2003, Palmer died of a heart attack in Paris at the age of 54. He was in Paris to promote his newest release, Drive. The Robert Palmer Discography is as follows:
